In Genesis 12:7, we find a powerful moment where God appears to Abraham, makes a promise, and Abraham responds by building an altar. This single verse contains profound insights about how we can position ourselves to receive God's blessings in our lives.
The first key to blessing is recognizing God's presence. Genesis 12:7 begins with "Then the Lord appeared to Abraham." God is always present, knowing all that happens in our hearts and lives, whether seen or unseen.
Even Jesus said in Matthew 10 that if a sparrow falls from the sky, God sees it. He even knows the number of hairs on our head! No step we take is beyond His sight. We are always known and seen by God.
This shouldn't surprise us because Jesus promised in Matthew 28:20, "Behold, I am with you always, even to the end." There's no way we can step out of His presence.
Sometimes our mind, will, and emotions disrupt our awareness of His presence. When we're tired or emotionally drained, it can be difficult to sense God. That's when we need to follow David's example and command our souls to worship: "Be still, soul. Worship the Lord, O my soul."
The second key is understanding God's promises. In Genesis 12:7, God tells Abraham, "Unto thy seed I will give this land." This speaks of promise.
God has tucked away in His Word and written on our hearts His promises. The promises in the Word of God are within our born-again heart for us to believe, receive, and experience.
Hebrews 8 tells us that Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant established on better promises. God wants to bless us! The issue isn't God blessing us; it's us not receiving His promises.
Spiritual gold lies hidden in our hearts and in the Word, ready to ignite faith. But we must be careful about what we speak. If we're always speaking doubt with our mouth, we may delay some of the blessings God wants us to give us.
Look at Abraham's example. For years, he had a promise from God but wasn't experiencing it. God changed his name from Abram to Abraham, which means "father of many nations." Everywhere Abraham went, he introduced himself as "Abraham, father of many nations." He began speaking differently, and the promise manifested.
Hebrews says, "Now faith is the substance..." That "now" is significant. Not tomorrow's faith or next year's faith, but NOW faith is the substance. Some of us have been waiting too long to receive what God has blessed us with because we haven't understood "now faith."
The third key is adopting the right posture. Genesis 12:7 concludes with "And there he built an altar to the Lord who appeared to him."
Abraham put himself in a place of proper posture. Throughout the Old Testament, we see people putting themselves in the proper posture—Abraham, Jacob, Isaac—all building altars to worship God and magnify Him.
We need to humble ourselves under God's mighty hand with the right posture, and He will lift us up. His mercy and grace should bring us into a posture of worship, leading to deeper fellowship.
Grace invites us near, but worship keeps us close.
Remember when David moved the Ark of the Covenant? Every six steps, he would stop to worship and make a sacrifice. That's the kind of posture we need in our lives. David was a man after God's own heart—he had the proper posture.
Many desire the blessings Abraham got without building the altars that Abraham built. In the stillness of worship, we hear God's whisper and feel the rhythm of His heart.
The fourth key is partnership. In John 14:18, Jesus said, "I will not leave you comfortless, but I will come to you." When Jesus was on earth, the disciples walked with Him. He promised not to leave them alone but to send the Comforter who would not only be with them but in them.
Many desire the blessings of the kingdom without a relationship with the King. Abraham was called a "friend of God" in 2 Chronicles 20:7 and Isaiah 41. The Holy Spirit is with us and in us, looking to speak and direct from within.
Proverbs says there's a friend closer than any brother—that's the Holy Spirit. He lives inside us, wanting to direct us, lead us, and partner with us. Jeremiah 29:11 says God knows the plans He has for us, but who will guide us to those plans? It's through partnership with the Holy Spirit.
We get the Lord at salvation, but He gets us when we surrender to His leadership.
The fifth key is participation. Seeking God is never in vain. Every step toward Him is met with grace, favor, and reward. Hebrews 11:6 says God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
We should no longer settle for a counterfeit life but embrace a life of adventure, purpose, and true joy. Even when following God gets tough externally, the joy inside is incomparable.
Matthew 6:25 says, "If you give up your life for my sake, you will find it." That's right posture, participation, and partnership.
God desires us to feast at His table instead of searching for crumbs on the floor. We're children of God, kings and priests, members of the household of God. He has blessings for us to receive and experience.
Faith speaks to mountains; doubt talks and complains about the mountain. We must speak to our mountains in faith, not complain about them.
This week, focus on implementing these five keys to blessing in your daily life:
Presence: Take time each day to acknowledge God's presence with you. Even in busy moments, practice awareness that He sees you and knows you intimately.
Promise: Identify a specific promise from Scripture that applies to your current situation. Speak it aloud daily and begin thanking God for its fulfillment before you see it.
Posture: Evaluate your worship habits. Are you building "altars" in your life? Create intentional moments of surrender and worship, even if just for a few minutes each day.
Partnership: Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your decisions today. Before making choices, pause and invite His input. Listen for His gentle direction.
Participation: Take one step toward something God has been calling you to do. Whether it's serving others, sharing your faith, or developing a spiritual gift, move from spectator to participant.
Ask yourself:
Remember, God has already positioned blessings in the spiritual realm for you. Your job isn't to convince Him to bless you but to position yourself to receive what He's already prepared.
