Kill the Old, Wear the New: How to Live as a New Creation in Christ

There is a wardrobe we all carry. On one side hang pride, shame, addiction, selfishness, hate, and lies. On the other side hang love, purity, peace, joy, freedom, grace, kindness, hope, truth, and faith. The question is simple: which side are you dressing from each day?

Colossians chapter 3 lays out a clear picture of what it looks like to kill the old life and wear the new one. It breaks down into three powerful areas: a new focus, a new fight, and a new lifestyle.

What Does It Mean to Have a New Focus as a Christian?

What We Focus On Shapes Where We End Up

Colossians 3:1-2 says, "If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth."

Whatever dominates our thoughts eventually begins to direct our life. Proverbs 23:7 puts it plainly: "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he."

Think about the contrast between King Saul and King David. Saul's focus was on David. David's focus was on God. That difference in focus shaped everything about how each man lived and led.

Philippians 4:8 gives us a clear target for our thoughts: "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

Salvation Is More Than a Decision. It Is a Death and a Resurrection.

Galatians 2:20 says, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me."

When we are born again, God gives us a new nature. But that does not mean the old one stops knocking. Every day we have to wake up and recognize that we are not our own anymore. That realization starts on our knees. The moment our feet hit the floor, we surrender the day to Him.

You Cannot Live a Heavenly Life with an Earthly Mindset

We live on earth, but we are citizens of heaven. First John 5:19 reminds us that "the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one." The culture around us is constantly trying to dress us in its clothes. Like Daniel, who refused to eat the king's delicacies, we have to refuse what the world is serving. Our flesh has an appetite for things our new nature does not want us to consume.

If the Holy Spirit is not influencing our decisions, something else is.

What Is the New Fight Every Believer Faces?

Sin Should Be Confronted, Not Managed

Colossians 3:5 says, "Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry."

Romans 8:13 echoes this: "For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live."

This is not passive. There is a pursuit involved. We do not drift into holiness. We fight for it, and we do not fight alone.

The Flesh Is Always Seeking to Reclaim Its Throne

Galatians 5:17 says, "For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh."

The flesh is like an ally within, working alongside the enemy outside. Demons know that believers carry the Holy Spirit, but they also know believers carry the flesh. They will work consistently and repeatedly to get us to open a door, to give a foothold, to let the old man back in.

Our flesh has access to our emotions. Tears and emotional responses do not always mean a ready heart. We have to allow God's Word to stand in the way and discern what is truly happening beneath the surface.

Many Believers Have New Life but Are Still Wearing Old Habits

Ephesians 4:24 says, "Put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness."

Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, but then He said, "Loose him and let Him go." Coming out of the tomb was one thing. Taking off the grave clothes was another. God can bring us out of addiction, out of bondage, out of darkness. But we have to choose to take off what we used to wear.

The old man is not just a memory. It is an open door if we keep choosing to put it back on.

What Does a New Lifestyle in Christ Actually Look Like?

We Are Called to Put On the New Man Every Single Day

Colossians 3:12-14 says, "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection."

Mercy. Kindness. Humility. Patience. Gentleness. Faithfulness. These are the clothes God has prepared for us. The world around us is constantly dressing up in dead man's clothes. But God has a new wardrobe, and Romans 13:14 tells us to put it on and make no provision for the flesh.

Walking in Forgiveness Is Part of the New Wardrobe

Unforgiveness is carrying yesterday into tomorrow. It does not justify what was done to us, but holding onto offense puts us in a prison of our own making. Jesus made it clear in Matthew 18 that an unforgiving heart blocks the forgiveness of the Father and gives the enemy legal ground to operate in our lives.

Hebrews 12:14 says to "make every effort to live in peace with everyone." Philippians 4:5 says, "Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near." Peace is not passive. It is a choice we make when offense feels completely justified.

The flesh reacts. The Spirit refuses to escalate.

The Highest Love Is Selfless Enough to Forget Itself

John the Baptist said it best: "He must increase, I must decrease." That is the posture of the new life. True love is not natural. It is supernatural. It is the fruit of the Spirit, not the effort of the flesh.

Gifts may attract people, but love keeps people. That is the mark of a mature, Christ-centered life.

The Enemy Is Watching for the Old Man to Show Up

Ephesians 4:27 says, "Give no place to the devil." First Peter 5:8 warns that "your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour."

The enemy waits for the old man because that is where temptation gets a grip and offense opens the door. Every time we choose to put on the old clothes, even in a small corner of our life, we are posting a vacancy sign. And the enemy is looking for a place to dwell.

Colossians 3:17 closes with this: "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." The Spirit realm is paying attention to our actions. We are called to live accordingly.

Life Application

This week, take an honest look at your wardrobe. Not the one in your closet, but the one you are putting on each morning in how you think, speak, and respond to others.

Choose one area where you know the old man keeps showing up, whether it is anger, unforgiveness, lust, pride, or fear. Make a deliberate decision to put it to death this week. Start each morning on your knees, surrendering that area to God before the day gets going. Make no provision for it. Do not give it a corner. Do not leave a vacancy.

Ask yourself these questions as you go through the week:

  • What am I consistently thinking about, and is it shaping me toward God or away from Him?
  • Is there an offense I am still carrying that I need to release, not because it was right, but because holding it is hurting me?
  • Am I reacting out of the flesh or responding out of the Spirit in my relationships this week?
  • What old habit or old identity am I still wearing that God has already buried?

Kill the old. Wear the new. Every single day.
